Women PoWer

I centenly know how lucky I am, I grow up in a world where woman are part of the Power. Yes today you can see women ruling the western world. From presidents and prime ministers, like Golda Meyer and Christina Fernandez, to the music land.

IIn my house my brother would make me listing to Missy Elliot and my mom to the Destiny Childs. And MTV and Much Music will show me  hip hop, singers, rappers amazingly powerful.

Sometimes when you see famous song, from a famous artist, well not just sometimes but pretty ofter we see this:
Take  the music, down and all you are going to see is a sexy woman, dancing showing her body in different ways that its just makes us a just a sexual objectification.

But then we have amazing women artist, the ones that I grow up admiring, THE QUEEN: Missy Elliot!

Missy, she appears in any feminist blog, she is a symbol of the hip hop! and she is the best at it!
Missy Elliot is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer and actress.  Elliott is a five-time Grammy winner and the only female rapper to have six albums certified platinum by the RIAA
Missy Elliot is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer and actress. Elliott is a five-time Grammy winner and the only female rapper to have six albums certified platinum by the RIAA. Coming from a rough childhood of domestic abuse, Elliott escaped through music and by forming her first band Fayze, where she eventually met future collaborators Timbaland and Magoo. She eventually earned great success as a solo artist and producer with hits like “The Rain,” “Get Ur Freak On” and more. Elliott has also done a handful of charity work, supporting PETA and a strong spay/neuter program for all adopted animals. She has also raised funds for the M.A.C. AIDS Fund and awarded four scholarships for a weight loss program for underprivileged teens. -CD

Missy Elliot, is a very successful female rapper who was able to build a legacy based on her talent and creativity alone.  She did show to the world that she can work it, she might show  us that we as woman we are able to rock at any platform, but this next woman, she knows how to combine everything!

Maybe today she is too mainstream for some listeners, but she represents women at the best, we can be powerful, but also SEXY.
She is not only a dancer, but lead singer, she started with destiny child, but the world discover her as BEYONCE. She is an actress, song writer, singer.

But she also represent women, I remember we went with my mom! to her concert in Argentina, all the women were thrilled to dance "Single Ladies".
She is married with the famous rapper Jay-Z, She absolutely represents everything, single women, power women, talented, and also a married woman, a sex symbol and today A MOTHER.

But you know when someone put a step outside of their comfort zone, to represent a group of people, that can defend by them self. In the video If I were a boy, sing about how women should find self respect, and not others for her.

Amon with other artist, we have today, Lil Kim, and Nicky Minaj, MIA, Queen Latifah, Trina

.

They represent other voices of the past and today, rapers, and Hip Hop. Before there used to be an award for the best female hip hop, and rapper.. which Missy Eliot won many times. But today doesn't not exist anymore, and its just the best rapper and hip hop. I think is an important step to think, if it is because we are looking to be equal or is it that they is not enough space for female performance.

Hopefully this is just a start, and we will see more of this amazing powerful performances!

Fuck the police

I think at some point we realized that many of our favorite artist have been in Jail. Specially on the hip hop - rap deal, at least they have been shot once, or they have lost their best friend on a gangster fight.

I remember when I watched Step Up 1. I cried, this girly hip hop TV musical, presented some daily life on the hip hop world. I remember that the younger brother of one of the protagonist died of a gangster shot fight. This a fictious example, but just to enter to wikipedia or the news you can see.

This is specially contected to what I mention before, the gangsta rap, some of them they get inside of group were they comitte crimes such as gun, possesions, drugs and murder. But also all the way around were, when they are being killes.

For example when the song Teach me how to dougie came out, everyone was listing to it and was obsses with it! and then I read the news,  that the singe/rapperr M-Bone from the californian  hip hop band Cali Swag District, was founded dead by a shot on may 15, 2011.

Also a common, tradition is the band, or friends rapper dedicate a song. M-Bone was in his car after visiting a local liquor store, when he was shot twice in the head.
And exactly three days after, the band CSD, premiered a song, "how to do that", in his honor.

Same you can see on the song, I will be missing you, a hit Grammy Award-winning single recorded by Puff  DaddyFaith Evans and 112, in memory of fellow Bad Boy Records artist Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G" Wallace who was murdered on March 9, 1997

Another famous faces, are (50 cent) Curtis Jackson III,  was born and raised in South Jamaica, a poverty-stricken urban neighborhood in Queens, New York City. He was shot 9 times!!

White do you CARE!?

Last week, I finish the blog post, quoting a few comments that I saw on differents Google searchers, about Eminem! How many people until today, they don't respect, admire or listing to white rappers."They don't what ghetto is, they cannot rap" between many post.Today we have so many rappers, and between them white rappers.I mean yes you have Eminem, the one that won tons of awards, but there is way more than that today .I will never forget, I was visiting my cousin she was 15 years old. She study in NY, in an art and music school. We were waiting outside of her school, and one of her white friends started to rap in the street, non stop, amazingly, I was just amazed. When he finished hes rap, were the funny topic, was how he got rejected when he asked to go to prom with one girl.

A SearchTalent, from a big company records, approach him with an opportunity to record a deal!Of course that can only happen in NY, but today the new talents, have all the skins. But where all this digging  comes from, well a research was done by Jason Rodriguez, who analyzed white rappers, and white appropriation in hip hop music.
Today the majority of Hip-Hop fans, it changed completely even 10 yeas ago. hip hop was always associated with African Americans, since the beginning. If you hear the slang, you can tell that is complete associated with black roots, and traditions.

MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - SAME LOVE feat. MARY LAMBERTHere Macklemore + ryan lewis: Today they are know as the best white rappers.
 MGK
Asher Roth rapper - hip hop mainstreem. And of course!

"Unless you want to fuck me, why do you care what I look like?" - Eminem On his skin.

Tragedy? Reality check? just rap?

T h e   G a n g s t a   S t y l e

No music industry forgets  Los Angeles. Rap started in the heart of NY, on the pure east coast, successfully the spread started. In the West coast a new type of rap started, Gangsta Rap. In the 80'-90' this Gangsta rap exploded in LA and the surroundings. But its just didn't came from nothing, Two florescent riots where the initiation of this movements, that really they installed beth the skin of the African Americans.

August 11 1966 The first Riot, started when a black resident was driving with his brother,  got the attention of a while police officer and told him that he was driving crazy on the road. The officer ask him to pulled over the vehicle. The police said that he failed the drunk-sober test and the officer arrested the man for drunk driving and his car would be taken. All the residents started to pay attention, what happened outside.  The citizens and the police started a big confrontation, which at the end the riots started to spread all over the city. It might started on the city, but it spread all over different locations, PasadenaSan Diego etc. We are talking about millions of damages and not even saying injured and even more than 40 deaths. But things didn't get better, in the 90's the riots continued, with more than 50 deaths. And this time the anger went through more cities, not only on the west coast, and costing more than 1 billion dollars damage lost. With so many deaths, the anger raised, and the gangsta rap developed, things weren't equal, rights weren't equal, this anger towards white people generate this new style of rap, a way for the society to raise their voice as a protest.
The first one I knew as a social protest, was gangsta paradise.  or the song

If you noticed, the lyrics are explaining how nobody understand how is living their lives, and how they need to fight for their rights. How they can move from there, because the government don't help them to get good education, and how they were supposed to fight for the rights, if they dont know what they are, they never been got good educations, and ways to get out of the ghetto.
<A color info, looking in internet about this subject I realized how many people complain about how Eminem doesn't deserve to be named as a good rapper, how because he is white, he doesn't know what a ghetto life is. >

Something from Nothing! The Art of Rap Double

over society! that this culture will grow up this way!

Something from Nothing! The Art of Rap

After our professor  Nirit, showed this movie in class this week, the first I did: Google!
For me google is my rap hero, there I can find any rap lyric that I want, and analyze. Rap is a world, that I used to feel that I was never invited.
I couldnt ever understand what were the lyrics saying, but after the movie I decided its about time to catch up. I set and I think read about 30 lyrics from different
artist that the professor presented in class, I can say that after 10 I started to understand. Although in class in learnt that music, HipHop, Rap its a way of expression as any other, and the best part its a play of sarcasm, I need it to sit and read every lyrics.
Its pure FLAVOR!

I think I fall in love with the rap lyrics that laugh on politicians, its just amazing how they find the way to show you a point of view and laugh at the same time.

The movie is narrated by the famous rapper ICE T. The movie had one goal, interview big names! lke Dr Dre, Eminem, Melle Mell, and many others that I discover in that movie. What I liked about the movie, thats its not a show off movie, the plan was only to show how this business moves everyday.
And thats its the interesting role of the movie, to show how it really works, how they admire each other and the only thing that they want its to keep this art industry growing.

Are you still thinking that Rap its just vulgarity?

Gospel, Jazz, motown, soul music and R&B get together with RAP to combine a music genre. When we talk about RAP, we talk about elements that can make music even more spicy or controversial that they are. You need to see Rap as a tool, as the spicy element that the genre needs. In all the world, we tend to see rap as representing a point of view, as a representing voice. There are many factors such us cultural issues, different generations, different countries, languages new artist that shape this type of music. And never stop changing.
Street Art-NY

Rap tells stories, Rap shows a lifestyle, but also raps can "offend" other group of people, and some can take is as an aggression  or vulgar. Because the Rap never stop changes, because there are always new artist, rap also can tent to be less or more vulgar for other people. Rap see them self as artist, as a way of expression. Rap in can represent  expression of emotions, looking for peace, looking to express some anger and pain. But Rap has his own magic that we tend to see in Art: Sarcasm.
Yes, rap specially with HipHop we tend to see it as a way of expression of the emotions, to represent injustice, anger and to show difficulties in people lives, but with an amazing twist: They laught about it!
This artist the play with it, yes they say, yes this the life that we have, but we need to be sarcastic, we need to make it art we need to use it!
Thats why sometimes you can think that there is a lot of vulgarity, or representing an expesive life, and funny clothes! Because they learnt to laugh such as any other art!

"what you want me to do with it?"don't matter just don't bite itshe swallowed it ..suck this dick for daddyshe swallowed it ..usin' that lipsshe swallowed it ..it's the world's biggest dick"what do you want me to do with it?"don't matter just don't bite it

Save My Soul

The
First
thing
I
Did

Well In the moment that I realized, that I will have a Hip-Hop class,
I just opened my eyes really big!

And said! welll lets youtube! Actually I end up th I stayed an entire day looking at RapGenious.com , trying to imagine, who people think is the best rapper? the best Hip-Hop?

Which one is the mainstream ? who are the women next to them!? are they famous women on board!?
I was puzzled! to look all the internet answers!
I saw, Kid cudi, Jay Z, Eminem, Drake, Lil wayne! and even women like Nicki Minaj and Beyonce!
I was like, not bad!
So then I was like, welllll I already now the most mainstream ones! and I bet YOU KNOW THEM TOO!

I realized that most of the results were culture fights!!
Some of them were like: Kid Cudi knows what he is talking about!
Be a man pick friends all selective now
You're cool, you're cool, fuck you

on save my soul lyrics.
For example Annette said: Its all about cleaning your soul!
and then Jim said: No! its about becoming a man!

And these coming and going, fights which they are not only fights, they are cultural clashes, its just amazing to observe!

A Mover El Culo!

I as an Argentinean, I grow up listing to the best band:

Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas

Anywhere in Argentina if you will sing this song, people will follow you with an: "JENNIFER LOPEZ NANANA, ABRIO LA HELADERA NANANA". This 90s band rocked our world, and they still do! But more impressive is that I been listing to their songs for years! but I never new that it was HIP HOP until this week! how is that even possible? Well I always thought they were more funk jam, and rap! but I didnt know that is all part of HIPHOP jam!

As we talked in class, Hip Hop started in the bronx, NY. Since 1948 the freeway Cross Bronx

Expressway, that connects the traffic between the Bronx and Manhattan, was been built. When a freeway is constructed in the city, there is always people who are affected by it. In this case all the  neighborhoods in the South Bronx making people forced to be relocated, and making all the house lowered property value. Which meant that most of the people that needed to live in low rent would live in this Slum Lords. Criminality, gangs, drugs started to be the main ingredient of the Bronx.

In the 1997-1998, Illya Kuraki and the Valderramas, recorded their fifth album, "Versus" where!? in the Battery Studios, New York! With some sould, funk, rap combined! I imagine as a rapper, as Hip Hop Artist its an honor to record in the homeland of the Hip Hop culture! The first cut was "Expedición al Klama Hama", one of the most beautiful songs of the band.

Come with me, and free your find, try to enjoy la mejor musica Argentina!

A mover el culo!!!!!

The Hip Hop ABC

Lesson 1! Just the beginning

First Hip Hop song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUqvPJ3cbUQ
The song ranked #248 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of "500 Greatest Songs of All      Time"

You just need to pay listing to the lyrics, and you can tell that hip-hop is about things that go against ideals, stigmas, societies. Though I still don't understand if this the reason that they transform from a subculture to today mainstream culture. In this blog we will fall apart what hip hop is all about. Yes you can say that they promote, violence, drugs, sexual objectification, alcohol.. but do they? is that all about?
Well check it out, there is more than you think!
